Fusing plastic is not a new thing. It’s an awesome way to recycle, and create a water proof and tough material. This is my first attempt, and I have a few other ideas, but to start, let’s make a reused, reusable tote.
first you need to fuse your bags. I did this by laying an old towel over my ironing board, then a couple layers of bags that I had opened up. I opened them up by cutting off the bottom seam and the handles and flattening them out. leave the bag doubled.
this is a great tutorial for fusing plastic and making a zipper pouch from it. I do have another of these coming up, but it will be much more intricate in the designing of the plastic. for now, we are going to be all brands.
I put parchment paper over my plastic bag and used a lower heat with no steam. keep the iron moving. to long in one spot and it will burn holes in the plastic. I just kept adding bags in a patchwork to create a large piece of “fabric”.
a couple tips on sewing plastics:
I have a walking foot. this makes EVERYTHING easier. if you can’t get your feed dogs to draw the plastic through, use parchment paper as a buffer between the plastic and the foot and feed dog.
use a long stitch and just like the cereal bags, DO NOT GO OVER YOUR STITCH LINE more then once. this creates a perfect perforated line upon which the bag will rip. I did a long zig zag and then a straight stitch. if you want to use your serger that will work well also.
decide how tall you want your bag and add 2″ to the width to create one long piece of fabric to be doubled over. We don’t want a seam on the bottom. So we are trying to use one long piece.
I originally did this tutorials pictures with a different design in mind. I tested it, it failed. so I took my bag apart and made the handles go all the way to the bottom and wrap around… fold over the top edge where your straps meet it so that when you fold down your top edge seam your straps are still placed right.
I always get asked about my bags, it’s part of the fun. people always comment on the Echino, but when they see a super fused bag with all of these familiar logos they get really curious!
as always, feel free to email me questions. there is a little “button” up there under my face with a link.
