Murphy’s birthday is right around the corner, and he has asked for BBQ drumsticks for dinner. While condiments in general are meant to be somewhat addictive in taste, I shy away from store bought BBQ sauce as its full of corn syrup and preservatives. ugh. So it was time to try my had at making our own.
As I was sifting through Pinterest for some recipes, as I usually do to find something fast, I noticed that they all have the same basic ingredients, so off I went:
sweet not spicy bbq sauce
1 medium yellow onion chopped
5 cloves garlic peeled and crushed
1.5 c ketchup
1.5 c tomato sauce
.25 c apple cider vinegar
.5 c molasses
.5 c Worcestershire sauce
tsp or more to taste cumin
tsp or more to taste red pepper flakes
add your fav hot sauce to make it spicy
Saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil in a medium sauce pot. Mine is about 2 qts. When the onions are translucent add everything else. Simmer 30 minutes or until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let cool before bottling or using.
makes about 1.5 qts
Murphy loved the taste of the sauce before I BBQ the chicken. But
then he lost it when the chicken was to blackened in parts. ugh.
The hubs and I really liked it.
used the last of the ketchup in our fridge which was a natural version
from Trader Joes. In the future I would like to make my own. I found
this recipe and this blog and I think its the recipe I will try first. Now that we are out of ketchup I may have to do it today…
