Yesterday kicked off another Kids Clothes Week, and its Sew Geeky time! together those two items mean Halloween prep!
This year, we are going to be Guardians of the Galaxy. I put together a little collage of star lord images trying to get an idea of what to do…
Hawley is first as Star Lord:
I knew we could keep this easy to wear for everyday as well as costume, I also didn’t really want to put in the time if it was going to be a one time use.
For the jacket, we needed a brick red/maroon pleather. However it is surprising difficult to find. The heavy weight vinyl upholstery material is available, but I wasn’t sure about sewing with that. In the end, we got a thinner marine grade vinyl. so its now a rain coat, bonus.
Hawley really wanted it to be a duster, but I just couldn’t do it. Aesthetic preference and the desire to be able to use this more than Halloween and dress up.
I used the Study Hall Jacket pattern as a base, only altering the collar a little and the hem. I lined it in green flannel, added the zipper pocket option and thanked my lucky stars I made it through without too many problems. You can’t seam rip on this vinyl without it being a permanent hole and showing the white supporting layers of the fabric. I added topstitching to keep the arm details and break up the solid vinyl. There are still a few little things that may need to be finished (topstitching the zipper), but he desperately wanted to wear it to school today.
In the movie, Star Lord’s pants are the basic Cargo pant but all “spacey” with knee pleated pads and duel colors in angled color blocking. I immediately thought of the Kudzu Cargos. They worked brilliantly. I made these a little big, because the denim I used had no stretch. As it turns out, there is a fair amount of growing room now. So, we can enjoy these much longer!
I had grand plans to make a mask, but, its a little easier (and cheaper) to go this route. I got lucky and found a dead walkman at the Goodwill, and we had the old head phones… so there you go:
