Do you ever wonder at what a small world it can be sometimes?
Even though I grew up here, Hubs grew up here, we forget when we are out and about just how close everything is, and that many of our childhood friends are living and working in communities nearby.
After all it is one of the reasons we came back. To be closer to family and friends.
We went to Astoria this last weekend. The day was off to a great start when we pulled into town and discovered that in the 13 years since I had been there Rogue brewing had put up a public house in an old Bumble Bee cannery. You have to drive out on the pier to park and check it out, so the novelty got started in true fashion with the cloppity sound of boards under tires.
As soon as we got out and the wind hits off the mouth of the Columbia, you hear the Sealions. Fresh back from mating season they are a terrible nuisance to the residents of Astoria, but they are great fun for those of us that have been away from the ocean for 11 years. The boys were excited to see them, but probably not as much as me.
We were getting ready to walk over to the next pier to check out these loud and smelly sunbathers when we noticed the coast gaurd patrol coming out of a shop with their lunches. We commented to the boys that these gentlemen were fine coast gaurd rescuers when I noticed that one of them is a dear old friend I haven’t seen in 13 years! Serendipity for sure. Hugs, smiles and introductions ensued, as well as the randomness of the event. Like I said, sometimes you forget that people you knew and cared for are probably still around. Hopefully we can all get together and reminence!
I have many more pictures, of course. We went to Ft.Stevens and showed the boys Battery Russell, the Peter IreDale and hung out with Central Oregon friends that relocated to the coast a couple years ago! A group of boys played nerf wars with Hubs in a decrepit military installation while my friend and I sat and knitted and chatted under the shade of what was once an important army station.
for now, enjoy your Sunday, enjoy the sun and family and whatever you may have around you! Oh yeah, and GOONIES NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
