I have taken on a commissioned project. Something I haven’t done before on this scale, and something that I have wanted to do but did not have enough of a reason to try it.
This is the Lion from Violet Craft’s Jungle abstractions series.
I have done small paper pieced projects, hexagons and the like. I did those by hand, and sort of liked the results. This however, I am really enjoying.
I am more of a messy quilter if I quilt at all. I like crazy quilts and samplers from old dresses and curtains. I have a love of modern quilting though. I always ooooh and ahhhh over the work that some modern quilters are putting out there including Violet Craft. So when my Cousin came to me with this I jumped up and said YES! I wanna do that!
I am trying to make sure I do not waste too much, but still this was the pile from day 1 of just the throw away, not even the scraps that were possible for later tiny parts.
I wasn’t sure of the method after getting all the templates printed. It seemed very daunting and I knew I would have to wait until the kids started back to school. So I did a little hunting around the internet and found a basic paper piecing video with Violet Craft and Rob Appell on Man Sewing. It helped immensely and I set to work.
I am really loving this process and may try to take on the elephant after winter break!
Although, I remember seeing this one in person and being floored, maybe I should try this :
Does this make me a quilter? Yikes! Thank you Violet for all your great work!
